What Is The Best Time To Go To Turks & Caicos? (Everything You Need To Know)

back to blog

Situated between the Bahamas and Haiti lies the tropical paradise of Turks & Caicos. This island nation is made up of eight main islands that are surrounded by endless cays and inlets just waiting to be explored.

Turks & Caicos is one of the best countries to vacation in the Caribbean. Why? As a British Overseas Territory, English is its official language so getting around the islands is a welcomed breeze. Another cool thing about the islands is that they are quick to reach from most East Coast airports – JFK is only a 3hr 40min flight.

Part of the Caribbean region, Turks & Caicos is home to pristine white-sand beaches and teeming tropical dive sites. It also boasts year-round warm water and weather. However, there are times of the year when most tourists tend to avoid Turks & Caicos. This article will fill you in on everything necessary to experience these mighty islands at their best.

What Is the Best Time To Visit Turks & Caicos?

The “best” time of year to visit Turks & Caicos could be considered subjective. What might be the ideal time of year for one family could be the exact time another is eager to avoid. This is why we will deliver you the facts on Turks & Caicos’s weather, rainfall, and busy tourist periods. You can then make your own mind up about when is best.

What Is the Weather Like In Turks & Caicos?

As we hinted already, the weather is warm all year long in Turks & Caicos. Although January is the “least warm” month of the year, it is a far cry from what’s going on in most US states at that time of year. Daytime temperatures often peak at around 77°F and fall back to 60°F in the evenings. Obviously, this isn’t what most people consider to be “cool”, but for Turks & Caicos, this is as cold as it gets.

The hottest months of the year in Turks & Caicos are August and September. With daily highs commonly reaching 88°F, you will want to make sure that your 50+ sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat are packed. Even in the dead of night, rarely will the mercury drop below 80°F in these months.

Finding a resort with an in-room aircon is, therefore, rather important. For anyone who lives by the motto “the hotter the better”, don’t start planning your Fall vacation to Turks & Caicos just yet. Why? Because there’s another seasonal consideration when it comes to the weather on Turks & Caicos and that is the rain.

What Is The Rainfall Like On Turks & Caicos?

The biggest influence on when to visit this tropical paradise is the rain. To minimize the chances of your vacation being a wet one, it is highly recommended to visit Turks & Caicos in the months of January through April. This is when rainfall, on average, is the least likely.

Even though Turks & Caicos are technically the driest chain of islands in this stretch of the Caribbean, at other times of the year, they are subject to serious amounts of rain. Hurricane season on Turks & Caicos kicks off on June 1st with the last chance of a Hurricane rolling through Turks & Caicos at the end of November.

The good news is that the chances of Turks & Caicos being in the direct line of a hurricane are rare at best. Only once in every seven-year period will a hurricane statistically make landfall on Turks & Caicos. This doesn’t mean that less-severe tropical storms and afternoon downpours aren’t common in the summer. The average monthly rainfall can be up to 3.7 inches in its rainiest month of September.

What Is The Most Popular Time To Visit Turks & Caicos?

The peak tourist season in Turks & Caicos kicks off in December and finishes at the end of March. This last hoorah uncoincidentally falls on the final week of Spring Break for most US schools.

People see Turks & Caicos (and the entire Caribbean archipelago for that matter) as the ultimate winter escape. The ability to jump on a short flight and be treated to deliciously sunny skies and warm weather through the deepest midwinter months is a big reason why so many people flock to these islands from December to March.

In fact, in any given year, it is estimated that 1.6 million tourists stop by Turks & Caicos for some tropical fun in the sun. Whether that be via cruise ship or flying in, these idyllic islands are a big attraction for tourists from English-speaking nations.

Thankfully, even with the influx of tourists, there are a few quiet sides to the islands that you can escape to if crowds aren’t your thing. Just don’t expect to be sunbathing on world-famous Grace Bay Beach by yourself at this time of year (it will be packed).

What Is The Least Popular Time To Visit Turks & Caicos?

As you have likely worked out, the least popular month in Turks & Caicos is September. September is when the heavens are on “open season” and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. The months surrounding September aren’t exactly bustling on Turks & Caicos either. Statistically, though, this is its least popular month for tourists.

The lack of tourists does create an opportunity for savvy travelers who don’t mind getting wet on vacation. Doing what everyone else is not doing has a proven track record for getting great deals on vacation. Resorts, restaurants, and tours on Turks & Caicos will be noticeable less expensive in the summer months – bargain hunters rejoice!

However, it must be known, that many of said amenities will shut over these months for refurbishments and to offer their staff some much-needed time off. So planning ahead is key to discovering Turks & Caicos when everyone else, is, well, elsewhere.

Conclusion

As we pointed out, the “best” time of year to visit Turks & Caicos is a subjective point that is very much up for debate. For most tourists, the months of December to April are prime time for Turks & Caicos as less rain means more sunbathing opportunities.

For the frugal crew who are happy to contend with afternoon downpours and fewer amenities, summer on Turks & Caicos presents a desirably quieter time. Whichever time of year you decide, Turks & Caicos is a stunning chain of islands that does “tropical paradise” better than most places.
